Canada’s mining sector, firmly committed to decarbonizing its activities, is facing several challenges arising from the energy transition. The industry must respond to increasing pressure to expand the production of mineral resources that are essential to the energy transition, while at the same time significantly reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
To align with Canada’s climate targets — including the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 — a transformation is required in the sector’s energy, technological, and industrial practices.
Guided by the values of innovation, collaboration, respect, sustainable development, and engagement, Decarbonization Mission, launched by MISA Group and Corem, is a pan-Canadian collaborative initiative designed to strengthen Canada’s mining sector as an international leader and engine of economic growth.
The mission places decarbonization and innovation at the heart of the sector’s development, with the goal of making Canada a strategic, responsible, and competitive producer and supplier of traditional metals as well as critical and strategic minerals and materials.
This initiative is part of the Alliance pillar of MISA Group, recognized for its structured approach to operational management of technological innovation and its active ecosystem of more than 400 stakeholders across the country.
Decarbonization Mission is built around five structural levers to decarbonize mining operations while ensuring their economic and energy performance:
Diversifying the Energy Supply
Exploring renewable sources (solar, wind, biomass, hydrogen, geothermal) and storage technologies (batteries, microgrids, etc.) to power mine sites in cleaner, more resilient ways.
Converting Energy Demand
Integrating clean energy (electrification, hydrogen, biomass, heat recovery) into industrial processes to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Energy Efficiency
Adopting energy-optimization technologies, smart management systems (IoT, AI), and smart grids to lower overall consumption.
Carbon Capture and Utilization
Deploying technologies for CO₂ capture, geological storage, and valorization, in alignment with environmental regulations and ESG goals.
Clean Manufacturing Technologies
Reducing the environmental footprint of mineral processing through manufacturing innovation and the electrification of value chains.
MOBILIZE
Bring together a synergistic pan-Canadian network of collaborators connected to the mining industry and Canada’s innovation ecosystem, fostering innovation, knowledge sharing, collective responsiveness, and strategic alignment.
PUSH BOUNDARIES
Enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of Canada’s mining sector by supporting the acceleration of decarbonization innovation projects. These initiatives will target both mining operations and supply chain offerings, focusing on high-value, low-carbon solutions to strengthen Canada’s industrial autonomy and international presence.
STANDARDIZE
Encourage a coherent and coordinated transformation of Canada’s mining industry in terms of decarbonization, promoting resource optimization and alignment around a shared vision that reflects regional and industrial realities.
CELEBRATE
Promote the dissemination, recognition, and visibility — in Canada and internationally — of innovations, technological solutions, and best practices emerging from Mission Decarbonization.
Reduction of GHGs in a high-energy-intensity sector.
Economic growth and the creation of green jobs and local value chains.
Alignment with federal priorities (Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy, Strategic Innovation Fund, Net Zero Accelerator, etc.).
Increased attractiveness for international investors in the clean technology sector.
Direct contribution to Canada’s global climate commitments.
Support for a differentiated Canadian offering on international markets through low-carbon, high-value-added mining products and technologies.
Positioning Canada as an exporter of clean mining solutions.
Reduction of Canada’s dependence on foreign technologies, materials, and supply chains, thereby strengthening national energy security.
Reinforcement of technological sovereignty, green competitiveness, and domestic production capacity, contributing to Canada’s status as a true clean energy and mineral superpower.
