The Challenge: Meeting the Demand for Metals While Reducing Carbon Footprint

Facing the dual pressures of supplying essential metals for the energy transition and significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Canada’s mining industry must reimagine its practices. This project provides a concrete roadmap for the sector, integrating sustainable energy management and decarbonization technologies.

Project’s Strategic Objectives

To build a resilient, low-carbon mining industry, the project focuses on four key areas:

1. Diversifying the Energy Supply

  • Renewable energy
  • Nuclear energy and new technologies
  • Energy storage technologies for renewable energies

2. Converting Energy Demand

  • Integration of renewable energies in mine electrification
  • Conversion of biomass into electrical energy
  • Use of hydrogen for mining electrification
  • Converting waste heat into electricity

3. Energy Efficiency

  • Technologies and practices for optimizing energy consumption
  • Intelligent management of energy resources
  • Energy storage
  • Integration of renewable energies into networks

4. Carbon Capture and Storage

  • Carbon capture technologies
  • Reduction of C02 emissions
  • Storage and recovery of captured C02
  • Environmental impact and economic benefits

Anticipated Impact: A Restructured, Sustainable Mining Industry

This project aims to transform Quebec’s mining sector into a cornerstone of Canada’s energy transition. By reducing GHG emissions, improving energy efficiency, and adopting innovative solutions, Quebec will position itself as a global leader in eco-friendly mining practices.
